How to Prepare Your Plants for Moving Day

Woman Moving Plants Upstairs

Do you have a favourite potted plant or lemon tree that will be accompanying you on your move cross country or down the road? After all, your beloved plants are like family—your new home wouldn’t be the same without them! At Bird’s Moving and Storage, we want to ensure that your move is smooth and organized, no matter what you’re packing.

So, because it’s not every day you take your plants on a road trip, we’re sharing some tips for prepping and moving your plants that will help preserve their beauty and integrity during the move.

Prep Your Plants Before Moving Day.

While your house plants may be healthy and hardy, it’s important to spend some time getting your plants ready for moving day. And while packing up your plants may sound like an intimidating process, here are a few simple tips to help you get started:

  • Repot your plants: To prevent damage to your planters, repot your plants in plastic containers at least a few weeks before the move—this will let your plants get used to their new pot, too.
  • Consider the time of year: Make sure that you have everything you need to water your plants and keep them comfortable during transportation. If you’re moving during summer, you’ll want to avoid leaving your plants in the car for too long without air circulation or water. Planning a winter move? Stock up on burlap or other materials to provide your plants with extra protection from the cold.
  • Review possible restrictions between borders: If you’re moving out of the country, you’ll need to check the restrictions related to bringing plants outside of the country. Always do your research well in advance.
  • Double check your moving company’s policies: Ensure that your moving company can pack and move your plants.

How to Keep Your Plants Safe During the Move.

Bird’s Moving is proud to move plants for our customers. However, due to the unpredictable nature of the drive, the amount of furniture and the weather, it can be difficult to guarantee proper space or temperatures for plants once they’re packed into the vehicle. To give your plants to best protection on moving day, follow these steps:

  • Local moving: Since your plants won’t be travelling very far, you can place your potted plants into boxes and move as-is. If you’re transporting multiple plants in the same box, use towels or packing materials to prevent the pots from breaking.
  • Long distance moving: If your move requires you to be in the car for days on end, HGTV recommends wrapping your plants in sphagnum moss and plastic or bubble warp to prevent the soil from spilling in your car or moving van, and to give your plants some extra cushion.
  • Label your boxes: Labelling the contents, and the right side, of the box will ensure that your movers take extra care when loading your plants.
  • Wrap delicate plants: If you have larger plants or trees that have delicate leaves or branches, be sure to wrap your plants to protect them from breakage or damage to their leaves.
